What is Spirit of the Game (SOTG)?
[edit]Spirit of the Game (SOTG) is central to all Flying Disc sports, an extension of fair play and sportspersonship, and is formative and applicable beyond sports.
Spirit of the Game is the mutual agreement on how to protect the basic joy of safe and fair play for all; often by striving to be the best version of oneself. All participants are required to avoid actions such as intentionally breaking the rules, playing dangerously, acting abrasively or other “win at all costs” behaviour. Being self-officiated, everybody is a referee and thus the integrity of the sport depends on everyone’s moral responsibility to uphold Spirit of the Game:
- Play by the rules
- Play safely
- Play nicely
- Play fairly
- Play together
Spirit of the Game teaches conflict resolution through dialogue even in high-pressure situations, like a World Championship gold medal on the line. Participants must listen and reflect on others’ perspectives, to accept that sometimes honest perspectives can be at odds, and how to progress with trust.
As such, Spirit of the Game encourages growth, reflection and personal development, which can be applied beyond the competition or sport, and is a valuable and influential lesson for all, starting from young.
